Three ways to spend a day off the Cancún coast.

Big catamaran, small sailboat, or a hull you have to yourself. The price gap between them is smaller than it looks once you count what is included, and the day feels completely different.
Catamaran, open bar, Playa Norte
Forty or so people, music on deck, a snorkel stop over the Manchones reef, then hours anchored off the north beach with a bar that does not close.
Small sailboat, adults sometimes only
Same island, a quarter of the people. Sails up on the crossing, a proper anchorage instead of a pontoon scrum, and someone who knows the channel doing the talking.
Your own hull for the afternoon
Split between six or eight it lands near catamaran money, and you choose the anchorage, the music and when you go home.
The best hours in Cancún are spent face-down in the water.
The Mesoamerican reef — the second-largest barrier reef on the planet — runs a few hundred metres off the hotel strip and all the way down the coast. Visibility is measured in tens of metres, the water sits near 28 °C in summer, and a mask costs nothing to add to a boat day.
The Maya cities are a drive, not a detour.
Chichén Itzá is roughly two and a half hours each way and the gates open at eight — the tours that leave Cancún before six are the ones that get you there before the heat and the coach park. Cobá and Ek Balam are closer, quieter, and greener.
There are no rivers in the Yucatán. There are cenotes instead.
Rain drains straight through the limestone, and where the roof has fallen in you get a swimming hole — open to the sky, half-covered, or a full cavern with the daylight coming down a shaft. Most tours bolt one onto the ruins run; a few make it the whole point.

Three things you can only really do from Cancún.
Reef snorkels and ruins runs exist all down the coast. A sunken sculpture gallery, the world’s biggest whale-shark gathering and a speedboat you steer yourself through a mangrove lagoon do not.
The Underwater Museum
More than five hundred life-size concrete figures stand on the sea floor between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, put there from 2009 onward to pull divers off the living reef and to give new coral something to grow on. The shallow gallery at Punta Nizuc is snorkelling depth; the big one at Manchones is a dive. Fifteen years in, the statues are half coral now, which was always the plan.

The Whale Shark Season
Every summer the plankton bloom north-east of Isla Mujeres draws one of the largest known gatherings of whale sharks anywhere — hundreds of animals in open water, an hour and a half out. Boats need a permit, swimmers go in a pair at a time with a guide and a life jacket, and nobody touches anything. Outside the season there is nothing to see, and any boat selling it in February is selling you a ride.

The Jungle Speedboat
A two-seat speedboat, a marina in the Hotel Zone, and a mangrove channel through the Nichupté lagoon that you steer yourself in single file behind a guide. It comes out at Punta Nizuc for a snorkel over the reef and then back the same way. Nowhere else on this coast hands you the wheel.

Some Cancún days are only sold for part of the year.
The sea runs the schedule here, not the hotels. Whale sharks are a summer animal. Winter brings the nortes — cold fronts out of the north that push a swell across the channel and can close the port for a day at a time, which cancels catamarans and fishing charters at short notice. The inland days do not care about any of it.
